The Moon is a rocky world composed of a crust, mantle, and small metallic core. Its surface is made primarily of dark volcanic basalt and lighter anorthosite, along with a layer of broken rock and fine dust known as regolith. A moon rock is any naturally occurring piece of rock that originated on the Moon. Some lunar rocks formed more than four billion years ago, during the earliest period of the Moon’s history. Ancient volcanic activity, enormous impacts, and the gradual cooling of the Moon all contributed to the landscape visible today. Unlike Earth, the Moon has almost no atmosphere, weather, liquid water, or active plate tectonics to continually reshape and erase its surface.
