An Accretion Disk is a rotating disk of gas, dust, and other matter drawn by gravity around a massive object such as a black hole, neutron star, or young star. The material does not fall directly inward, but instead orbits the central object while gradually spiraling closer to it. As particles within the disk interact, energy is converted into heat, causing the material to reach extremely high temperatures. In some systems, this heating makes the accretion disk glow intensely and produce enormous amounts of radiation. Around black holes, the disk can become one of the brightest structures in the universe even though the black hole itself produces no light. Accretion disks also form around young stars, where the surrounding material can eventually contribute to the formation of planets and other objects. They reveal how gravity can gather scattered matter into a rotating structure that may ultimately feed, transform, or create something new.
