A Blue Giant is a massive, extremely hot star that shines with a blue or blue white appearance. Its color comes from its high surface temperature, which can reach tens of thousands of degrees. Blue giants are much more massive and luminous than the Sun and can release enormous amounts of energy into the surrounding space. Because massive stars consume their nuclear fuel very quickly, they generally have much shorter lives than smaller stars like the Sun. During their lifetimes, fusion within these stars can produce increasingly heavy elements as the star evolves. Many massive blue stars eventually undergo dramatic changes and may end their lives in powerful supernova explosions, leaving behind neutron stars or black holes.
