The Chromosphere is a layer of the Sun’s atmosphere located above the visible surface, called the photosphere, and below the outer atmosphere known as the corona. Its name means sphere of color, referring to the reddish glow that can sometimes be seen around the Sun during a total solar eclipse. The chromosphere is composed primarily of extremely hot, electrically charged gas known as plasma. The chromosphere is an important transition between the relatively cooler visible surface of the Sun and the extraordinarily hot corona extending far into space. Chromosphere is a turbulent region where heat, plasma, and magnetic energy interact above the surface of our star.
