The Sumerians were among the ancient world’s great architects, transforming the flat landscape of Mesopotamia into cities filled with temples, walls, canals, courtyards, and monumental structures. Beginning more than five thousand years ago, they developed sophisticated building traditions despite living in a region with relatively little stone or timber. They relied heavily on mud brick, creating enormous structures from one of the simplest materials available in their environment. At the center of many Sumerian cities stood monumental temple complexes that eventually developed into ziggurats: massive, stepped platforms that elevated sacred spaces above the surrounding city.
