Precognition is the claimed ability to perceive or know information about a future event before it occurs and before that information could be obtained through ordinary means. The word comes from Latin roots meaning “before” and “to know,” literally suggesting knowledge in advance. Accounts of precognition have appeared throughout history in the form of prophetic dreams, visions, omens, intuitions, and sudden impressions about events that later seem to occur. During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, psychical researchers and later parapsychologists attempted to study precognition experimentally alongside phenomena such as telepathy and clairvoyance.
