Distant Reply is a phrase rooted in the history of long-distance communication and humanity’s effort to send messages across increasingly greater distances. By the beginning of the Space Age, this idea extended beyond Earth as radio signals became the primary means of communicating with satellites, probes, and spacecraft traveling through the Solar System. Radio astronomy and later searches for extraterrestrial intelligence also transformed communication into a larger cosmic question about whether another intelligence might someday detect a signal originating from Earth.
