Time Dilation is a real effect predicted by Einstein’s theories of relativity in which time passes at different rates depending on motion and gravity. In special relativity, a clock moving at extremely high speed relative to an observer will appear to run more slowly than the observer’s own clock. In general relativity, gravity also affects time, with clocks experiencing stronger gravitational fields running more slowly than clocks experiencing weaker gravity. Near an extremely massive object such as a black hole, this difference can become enormous. Time dilation is not simply an illusion of observation because the difference between clocks can be measured when they are compared.
