In 1956, Jack Kerouac spent about two months alone as a fire lookout on Desolation Peak in Washington State, an experience that deeply influenced The Dharma Bums and later became central to Desolation Angels. Kerouac arrived with romantic ideas about solitude, believing that isolation in the mountains might bring him closer to the enlightenment he had encountered through his study of Buddhism. Instead, the silence removed many of the distractions that normally separated him from his own thoughts. He encountered loneliness, boredom, impermanence, and the persistent activity of his own restless mind.
