Andromeda

In Greek mythology, Andromeda was an Ethiopian princess, daughter of King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia. After Cassiopeia boasted that she or Andromeda was more beautiful than the sea nymphs, Poseidon punished the kingdom. Andromeda was chained to a rock as a sacrifice to a sea monster, but Perseus saw her, killed the monster, and rescued her. After her death, tradition says she was placed among the stars as the constellation Andromeda. The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) lies in the direction of that constellation and therefore inherited its mythological name. It’s the nearest large galaxy to the Milky Way, roughly 2.5 million light-years away, containing hundreds of billions of stars.
