Channel Migration is the gradual movement of a river or stream channel across a landscape as flowing water continually reshapes its boundaries. Water erodes soil and sediment from one bank while depositing new material along another, causing bends in the river to slowly shift position. Over years, centuries, or longer periods of time, this process can dramatically alter the course of a river and leave abandoned channels, floodplains, and other traces of its previous paths behind. A river that appears permanent is therefore actually a changing structure created by the continuous movement of water and sediment.
