Europa is one of Jupiter’s largest moons, with a fractured icy surface covering a vast saltwater ocean. Discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610, it is covered by a bright crust of water ice marked by enormous fractures, ridges, and disrupted regions that suggest the surface has shifted repeatedly over time. Gravitational forces from Jupiter continually flex Europa as it travels through its orbit, generating tidal heating that may help keep water liquid beneath the ice. If Europa’s ocean interacts with the rocky material deeper inside the moon, it could contain some of the chemical ingredients and energy sources considered important for life. For this reason, Europa has become one of the most important destinations in humanity’s search for potentially habitable environments beyond Earth.
