In astronomy, a transit occurs when a smaller body moves between the observer and a larger, more distant object, appearing to cross its visible surface. Mercury and Venus, for example, occasionally transit the Sun and appear as small dark silhouettes moving across its bright disk. Beyond the Solar System, astronomers observe similar passages when exoplanets cross in front of their stars. The planet temporarily blocks a tiny fraction of the star’s light, creating a measurable decrease in brightness that can reveal the planet’s existence and provide information about its size and orbit.
