Irreversibility
Irreversibility describes processes that move in one direction and cannot simply be undone by reversing time. Many fundamental equations of physics work almost equally well forward or backward, yet the larger world around us clearly does not behave this way. A shattered object does not spontaneously rebuild itself, heat naturally spreads from warmer regions into cooler ones, and stars consume their fuel without returning to their original state. Thermodynamics explains much of this direction through entropy, which tends to increase in an isolated system and gives rise to what physicists call the arrow of time.
