The word albedo comes from the Latin albus, meaning white, and is used in astronomy and climate science to describe how reflective a surface or planetary body is. Earth reflects roughly thirty percent of the solar energy that reaches it, primarily through clouds, atmospheric particles, ice, snow, and bright surfaces. Darker surfaces such as forests and oceans generally absorb more sunlight, while brighter surfaces such as snow and ice reflect more of it. Because of this, changes in Earth’s surface can alter its overall energy balance.
