Remote Viewing is the claimed ability to perceive information about a distant or unseen location without using the ordinary senses. The idea became particularly prominent during the Cold War, when researchers in the United States investigated whether unusual forms of perception could have military or intelligence applications. Beginning in the 1970s, experiments at Stanford Research Institute and later government sponsored programs asked participants to describe distant locations, objects, and activities that were hidden from them. The research eventually became associated with the U.S. government program commonly known as Stargate. Remote viewing also became connected to ideas about consciousness existing independently of ordinary distance, raising questions about whether the mind could somehow obtain information from places the body had never visited.
