Flight Path in spaceflight describes the route a spacecraft follows as it travels through space. Unlike an aircraft flying through the atmosphere, a spacecraft does not simply point toward its destination and continuously propel itself forward. Its path is shaped by its initial velocity, the gravitational pull of planets and other bodies, and carefully timed engine burns that alter its speed or direction. Mission planners calculate these trajectories far in advance, sometimes using the gravity of planets or moons to redirect a spacecraft and send it farther into the Solar System. A spacecraft may coast for months or years with its engines largely inactive while gravity and momentum carry it along its calculated course.
