Frequency Shift describes a change in the observed frequency of a wave, meaning the rate at which its repeating cycles are detected. One of the most familiar causes is the Doppler effect, which occurs when the source of a wave and the observer move relative to one another. A source approaching an observer produces a higher observed frequency, while a source moving away produces a lower one. In astronomy, this principle becomes an important way of studying objects that are far beyond our physical reach. Light from an object moving away can shift toward longer, redder wavelengths, while light from an approaching object can shift toward shorter, bluer wavelengths.
