Ganymede is the largest moon of Jupiter and the largest moon in the entire Solar System, even larger than the planet Mercury. It was discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610 along with Io, Europa, and Callisto, providing important evidence that not everything in the heavens orbited Earth. Ganymede is composed primarily of rock and water ice, with a heavily cratered surface. Scientists believe Ganymede contains a vast saltwater ocean that may hold more water than all of Earth’s oceans combined. It is also the only moon known to generate its own intrinsic magnetic field, likely produced by movement within its liquid iron core. Its name comes from Ganymede of Greek mythology, a beautiful Trojan youth whom Zeus carried to Olympus to become cupbearer of the gods.
