For a rocky planet like Earth, the solid surface provides a clear boundary between the planet’s interior and atmosphere. But the atmosphere itself becomes progressively thinner with altitude rather than suddenly ending. Eventually its particles become so sparse that the atmosphere merges into the surrounding environment of space. Scientists sometimes use boundaries such as the Kármán line, approximately 100 kilometers above sea level, as a practical definition for where space begins.
