An Impact Basin is an enormous depression formed when an asteroid, comet, or other large object strikes the surface of a planet or moon at tremendous speed. Impact basins are much larger than ordinary impact craters and can extend hundreds or even thousands of kilometers across. The collision releases an extraordinary amount of energy, excavating rock, melting portions of the surface, and sending debris across the surrounding landscape. Some impacts create enormous rings of mountains and fractures around the basin as the crust responds to the force of the collision.
