The Receiver is the part of a communication system that detects and interprets a signal arriving from somewhere else. During the development of radio in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, increasingly sensitive receivers allowed people to detect electromagnetic signals traveling across distances without any visible connection between sender and listener. Astronomy expanded this idea beyond Earth when scientists discovered that stars, galaxies, and other objects naturally produce radio waves that can be detected with specialized instruments. A radio telescope does not just look into space, but receives extremely faint electromagnetic signals that may have traveled for millions or billions of years before reaching Earth.
