Parallax is the apparent shift in the position of an object when it is viewed from two different locations. A simple example occurs when you hold a finger in front of your face and alternate between looking through your left and right eye, causing the finger to appear to move against the background. In astronomy, the same principle allows scientists to measure the distances to nearby stars by observing them from different positions in Earth’s orbit around the Sun. Over the course of six months, Earth moves to the opposite side of its orbit, creating an enormous change in viewing position. A nearby star then appears to shift slightly against the much more distant background stars. The smaller this apparent shift, the farther away the star is from Earth.
