In quantum mechanics, a system can exist in a superposition containing several possible outcomes before an interaction or measurement produces the result we experience. Everett proposed that these possibilities do not necessarily disappear when an outcome occurs, but instead become associated with different branches of the universe. Each branch contains a different outcome of the same quantum event, creating what can be imagined as parallel histories developing alongside one another.
