Heavenly vault is an ancient poetic term for the sky or heavens imagined as a vast dome arching over the Earth. Before the modern understanding of space, many cultures pictured the stars, Sun, Moon, and planets as existing upon or beyond a great celestial structure surrounding the world. The idea appears in ancient Mesopotamian, Greek, Roman, biblical, and medieval traditions, although different cultures understood the structure of the heavens in different ways. As astronomy developed, the physical idea of a solid heavenly structure was replaced by the understanding of an immense three dimensional universe.
